Senators Kerry and Kennedy Announce Senate Committee Approval of $2 Million for New Bedford-Martha’s Vineyard Ferry Boat

Thursday, July 12, 2001

Washington, DC -- U.S. Senators John F. Kerry and Edward M. Kennedy announced today that the Transportation Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $2 million in funding for the purchase of a new ferry linking New Bedford with Martha's Vineyard. The funds will be included in the Senate Interior Appropriations Bill for the fiscal year starting October 1.

"These funds mean that residents and tourists alike will have an easier time reaching the Vineyard," said Senator Kennedy. "A fast ferry will reduce congestion on the Cape and make a significant contribution to downtown New Bedford."

Senator Kerry said, " This funding for a new ferry between New Bedford and Martha's Vineyard will help ease traffic congestion crossing the Cape Cod Canal and give our residents an easier way to reach Martha's Vineyard."

The 300-passenger high-speed ferry would replace a conventional diesel-powered monohull vessel. This ferry by-passes the heavily traveled bridges crossing Cape Cod Canal, and thereby significantly reducing traffic in the Cape Cod waterway.
