Senators Kerry and Kennedy Announce Senate Committee Approval of $1 Million for Improvement of the Fall River Waterfront

Friday, July 13, 2001

Washington, DC -- Senators John F. Kerry and Edward M. Kennedy announced today that the Transportation Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $1 Million for the economic and aesthetic improvement of the Fall River waterfront. The funds will be included in the Senate Interior Appropriations Bill for the fiscal year starting October 1.

Senator Kerry said, "These funds are critical to increasing access to the Fall River waterfront and improving the aesthetic appeal for residents and visitors."

Senator Kennedy said, "I'm pleased that we're able to secure these funds for this exciting project. The relocation of Route 79 will help Fall River residents and tourists reconnect to the scenic waterfront area, and should have a significant impact on the local economy."

The Route 79 Relocation and Harbor Area Enhancement Project will combine a portion of Route 79, Davol Street North and Davol Street South in Fall River into a four-lane urban Boulevard with a large landscaped median strip separating the northbound and southbound lanes. This project will stimulate economic development, improve the aesthetic appeal of the Fall River waterfront and enhance the traffic circulation for vehicular access to the harbor.

Additionally, this enhancement project will create 8.5 acres of land for further economic development in Fall River. A new office development had been planned for a portion of this space near Route I-195, and a 200 room waterfront hotel with a marina and a restaurant, along with supporting parking facilities and a waterfront boardwalk, have also been planned to further enhance the Fall River waterfront.
