COCHRAN CHAIRS HEARING TO DISCUSS THE STATE OF U.S. FOREIGN LANGUAGE CAPABILITIES IN THE AREA OF NATIONAL SECURITY

Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) will hold a hearing of the Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services tomorrow, Thursday, September 14, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. in 342 Dirksen. The subject of the hearing will be "The State of Foreign Language Capabilities in National Security and the Federal Government - Part I".

The purpose of this hearing is to more clearly define the United States' need for foreign language proficiency as it relates to our national security. The subcommittee will examine whether or not the appropriate resources are available for training and personnel in order to increase foreign language capabilities and improve our nation's international communication and translation abilities.

The following witnesses will testify before the subcommittee: Ellen Laipson, Vice Chairman, National Intelligence Council; Marc Grossman, Assistant Secretary of Human Resources and Director General of Foreign Service; Christopher Mellon, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence; and David E. Alba, Assistant Director, Investigative Services Division.
