CONGRESS APPROVES DISASTER RELIEF FOR FARMERS

Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. Senate has approved legislation that provides $5.5 billion in immediate disaster assistance for farmers, Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) announced today.

"I am pleased the Senate has taken this action to provide immediate assistance that will put money in the pockets of farmers who have been enduring severe economic losses," said Cochran, a senior member of the Agriculture Committee.

The bill includes $4.6 billion in Market Loss Assistance payments, along with $900 million in assistance for soybean and specialty crop producers.

The funding provided in this farm economic assistance legislation is the same level of support approved earlier by the House of Representatives. The bill will now go to the President for his signature. Farmers can expect to receive their Market Loss Assistance payments prior to September 30th.
