Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Senate today adopted an amendment introduced by Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) that would require the Federal Election Commission to post all federal election reports on the Internet.
"My amendment will ensure that election related reports will be made accessible to the general public as quickly as possible. I think the American people have a right to know who is financing these political campaigns, how much they are spending, and how they are spending it," Cochran said. Under the terms of the amendment any designation, statement, report or notification that is filed with the FEC must be made accessible to the public and posted on the Internet within 48 hours of being received by the Commission. If the information is filed electronically, it must be posted on the web site within 24 hours of receipt. Cochran's amendment requires that the FEC shall maintain a central site on the Internet to make all publicly disclosed election-related reports and information accessible to the public. The amendment states that "election-related report" means any report, designation or statement required to be filed under the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971. The amendment further requires other federal executive agencies that receive election-related information to coordinate with the FEC and make the report available for posting on or through the web site in a timely manner.
