A limited number of intern opportunities are offered in Senator Bayh’s Washington, D.C. and state offices for qualified students. The program is designed to create a unique opportunity to enrich your academic experience with direct participation in the legislative process and public service.
Washington interns will have the chance to observe the operations of the United States Senate and its interaction with the House of Representatives and the executive branch of the federal government. In addition to attending committee hearings, tracking legislation, drafting press releases or problem solving on behalf of constituents, interns should have reasonable expectations for mail room duties, clerical support and front office/reception experience.
The state office interns will gain another perspective - how elected officials can help constituents resolve problems with the federal government and how legislative activities connect with events back home. Students will have the opportunity to attend meetings, track legislation, assist in the resolution of constituent issues, and write letters of support in addition to providing clerical support to Senator Bayh’s field staff.
Interested students with a solid academic record, involvement within their school and/or community and eagerness to learn more about our federal government are encouraged to apply. The program is geared toward those who have completed a year of college, and students will be best served by strong writing and research skills, adaptability to a fast-paced environment and enthusiasm. It will be additionally helpful if students are familiar with computers, have good office manners and enjoy helping other Hoosiers!
