Bayh: Washington Must Learn to Live within its Means
Senator Evan Bayh spoke out against fiscal
irresponsibility in Washington during a series of stops across Indiana this month, explaining why he was the only
Senate Democrat to vote against a federal budget that would
add at least $2 trillion to America's ballooning national debt over the
next five years. Bayh called on
Republicans and Democrats to work together to reverse the fiscal
direction of the country.

Bayh Pledges to Protect Local Workers, Industry Vital to U.S. National Security
Senator Bayh discussed the importance of keeping national security
jobs in Indiana, including the more than 150
manufacturing jobs provided by high-performance magnet producer Thomas &
Skinner of Indianapolis. During a visit to the manufacturer's local plant, Bayh discussed
language he supported in the 2008 Department of Defense (DoD) authorization bill
that requires the U.S. military to purchase specialty
metals used in defense systems from American producers. The U.S. high-performance magnet industry has been hit hard in recent
years by China's efforts to dominate the market. Five years ago, Indiana lost more than 225 jobs when Chinese investors moved the
operations of Indiana-based Magnaquench to China.

Smith, Bayh and Nelson Propose Mental Health Equity for Troops
Along with Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Bill Nelson
(D-FL), Senator Bayh introduced legislation aimed at eliminating assistance
disparities for members of the armed services who receive inpatient
treatment for serious psychiatric conditions. The Travel Assistance for
Family Members of Our Troops Act of 2008 (S. 2689) will allow family
members of service men and women with severe psychiatric conditions to
receive the same travel allowances as families of patients being
treated for serious physical injuries. [ read more ]
Bayh Calls for Changes to Address Backlog in Veterans Benefits Cases
Senator Bayh is calling for an increase in funding for the Veterans
Benefits Administration (VBA) to make needed changes to address the growing
backlog of more than 660,000 compensation and pension claims filed by America's veterans.

Bayh Introduces Weather Radio Bill to Warn Families of Severe Weather Threats
Senator Bayh announced the introduction of Senate legislation
("C.J.'s Law") requiring manufactured homes not affixed to a permanent
foundation to be equipped with weather radios to warn families of the threat of
tornados and other severe weather. Evansville resident Kathryn
Martin lost her 2-year-old son, C.J., and two other family members
when an F3 tornado hit Southwest Indiana in 2005. She did not
have a weather radio in her home and has lobbied for this legislation to honor the memory of her son.

Bayh Calls for Full Funding of Program to Assist Small Manufacturing, Create Jobs
Senator Bayh called for increased support for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) and the inclusion of $122 million for the program in the fiscal year 2009 budget resolution. In a letter to the Senate Budget Committee Chairman and
Ranking Member, Senator Bayh wrote, "The MEP is an invaluable federal program that provides technical
assistance to small- and medium-sized manufacturers, enabling them to
enhance productivity and competitiveness and thus create and retain
jobs in the United States."
