Capparis sandwichiana
Capparis sandwichianaCapparis sandwichiana is a vulnerable species endemic to coastal areas of the Hawaiian Islands and adjacent atolls. Commonly called the Hawaiian caper, this plant is a close relative of the caper grown in Mediterranean climates whose flower buds are pickled and used to season food. Though Capparis sandwichiana is not used for culinary purposes, it has traditionally been very useful as a medicinal plant, serving as a treatment of injuries to joints, bones, and skin. Habitat destruction and competition from invasive plant species are threats to Capparis sandwichiana and many other native plant species in the Hawaiian Islands.
