USBG Gardens and Plant Collections
In addition to providing a tranquil and beautiful environment for visitors, the USBG strives to make its gardens and living collections important resources for the study of threatened plants and their conservation. While enjoying our conservatory and gardens, be sure to visit these plantings that highlight the beauty, importance, and conservation of threatened plants:
  • The Rare and Endangered House
  • The Orchid House (click here for virtual tour)
  • The Desert House
  • Southern Exposures
  • Rare and Endangered Plants of Hawaii
  • The Medicinal Plant House
The United States Botanic Garden’s living collections are comprised of over 13,000 taxa used for exhibition, conservation, study, and exchange with other institutions. While not all plants are on display in the conservatory and gardens, an inventory of the living plant collections, including information about the plants in the collections designated with conservation status and protection, is available for review. Please contact the USBG Records Department (202-226-4067) for inquiries regarding the living plant collections inventory.

Access to USBG Plant Collections
Worldwide, botanical gardens currently hold representatives of up to one-third of the vascular plant species of the world. These represent a vast conservation resource of stored and managed biodiversity for the future. In the spirit of cooperation and responsibility, the USBG strives to provide access to its collections and share information with others who are involved in the study and conservation the world’s flora.

When possible, plant material from and information about USBG collections may be made available for exchange with persons and institutions engaged in research, education, and conservation activities. The USBG supports the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES) and all exchanges will be made in a manner that is consistent and in compliance with these and other relevant laws and conventions relating to the protection of biological diversity.

Please contact the USBG Records Department (202-226-4067) with requests and inquiries.
