The Wilkes Expedition A to Z: Australia to New Zealand
Co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History Department of Botany in cooperation with the Embassies of Australia and New Zealand.
West Orangerie - April 1 through April 30, 2005

Every April the Botanical Partners on the Mall celebrate the legacy of Admiral Wilkes, who commanded the famed U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. Thousands of the specimens collected during this global expedition formed an important part of the collections at both the U.S. Botanic Garden and the National Museum of Natural History. The exhibit this year focuses on the Expedition’s travels to Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica and recreates some of the experiences recorded by the "scientifics" as they explored the countryside during the early days of foreign settlement.Portrait of Charles Wilkes
