Plants in Culture

West Gallery

Permanent Exhibit

Plants in Culture, a new permanent exhibit, has opened in the West Gallery. From the aromatic incense of the Catholic Mass, to the Japanese tea ceremony and the decorative acanthus leaves on Greek columns, plants have played an important role in the development of therapy, ornamentation, music, ceremony, language, and many other expressions of culture. The new exhibit offers many sensory experiences, such as smelling the aromas and seeing the videos found in the larger-than-life plant sculptures of the “Garden of Ideas,” or hearing voices speaking plant-inspired phrases in the “Temple” that is the centerpiece of Plants in Culture.
