Rare and Endangered Plant

Pritchardia affinis
Pritchardia affinis Pritchardia affinis, is an endangered palm endemic to the island of Hawaii. Seven remaining populations of this plant totaling about 400 individuals are known to exist in the wild. Threats to Pritchardia affinis include development, competition from invasive plant species, and animals such as rats and feral pigs, which eat the fruits, seeds, and young plants. A program protecting and restoring populations of Pritchardia affinis is currently being implemented by government agencies and botanical gardens in Hawaii. Propagation in nurseries for landscape use in Hawaii may also help to perpetuate the survival of this species.
