Haplostachys haplostachya Known commonly as Honohono, Haplostachys haplostachya is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It is endangered due to overgrazing, conversion of forest to pasture, and competition from invasive weeds. Currently, efforts are being made to conserve remaining populations of Haplostachys haplostachya. Fencing of its habitat has been proposed to protect plants from grazing animals. Studies have been undertaken to map the genetic diversity of the remaining populations to better understand how conservation should be carried out. Propagation of this species is being studied at nurseries, universities, and botanical gardens, including the United States Botanic Garden. |
