Gaillardia aestivalis var. winkleri
Gaillardia aestivalis var. winkleri Populations of Gaillardia aestivalis var. winkleri, known commonly as Winkler’s Gaillardia, are restricted to one county in eastern Texas. This endangered species is extremely well-adapted to the xeric conditions of its native habitat, the sandhills of the East Texas Pineywoods. Development and fire suppression in and around the East Texas Pineywoods threaten the survival of many populations of endemic and rare plant species, including Winkler’s Gaillardia. Currently, efforts are being made to protect remaining habitat in the East Texas Pineywoods and to study the effects of periodic controlled burning on threatened plant populations there.
