Rare and Endangered Plant

Delissea rhytidosperma
Delissea rhytidosperma Delissea rhytidosperma is an endangered member of the Lobelia Family that is endemic to the island of Kauai. The lowland forest habitat where this species grows has been disturbed by overgrazing by domestic and wild animals, by naturally occurring events such as fires, storms, and landslides, and by encroachment of invasive species of plants. Currently, only fifteen plants survive in two remaining wild populations of Delissea rhytidosperma. Conservationists are taking measures to protect these remaining populations, including weed control, fire suppression, fencing to exclude animals, and conservation of plants and seeds in botanical gardens and seed banks.
