Agave victoria-reginae Agave victoria-reginae is endemic to the arid lower elevations of the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains in northeastern Mexico. Unsustainable harvesting by plant collectors who value this plant for its striking appearance has severely impacted wild populations. Consequently, legislation to regulate international trade of this species has been enacted. While Agave victoria-reginae remains endangered in its native habitat, it has become very common in cultivation. By offering Agave victoria-reginae propagated from cultivated stock, nurseries have created a sustainable alternative to harvesting plants from the wild. As a result, demand for illegally collected wild specimens has declined sharply. |
