Frequently asked
questions
How do I apply for Social Security
retirement, disability, or survivors benefits?
You can start the application process by calling the Social
Security Administration toll- free at (800) 772-1213, or you
can visit you local Social Security office.
I have become disabled and can
no longer work. What will the Social Security Administration
look at when evaluating my disability claim?
The Disability Determination Bureau (DDB) needs information
that shows that you cannot work any job that can provide substantial,
gainful work activity for which you would earn more than $780
per month. Your disability must also be expected to last more
than 12 months. When evaluating your claim, the DDB will consider:
your physical or psychological condition, you age, your education,
and your past work activity.
What if my application for Social Security disability
benefits is denied?
The notice of denial includes information regarding
your right to appeal. If your initial application was denied,
you have 60 days to request a reconsideration at the Disability
Determination Bureau. If your reconsideration was denied,
you have 60 days to request a hearing before an Administration
Law Judge in the Office of Hearings and Appeals. If your hearing
was denied, you have 60 days to request a review by the Appeals
Council in Virginia. You can request the appeal paperwork
by calling (800) 772-1213 or by visiting your local Social
Security office.
