Bachmann Helps Pass Key Veterans Bills

Washington, DC) – Today, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann supported the bipartisan passage of two key pieces of legislation to help America’s veterans. The bills will increase veterans’ access to medical care (H.R. 1527) and increase financial support for wounded veterans and their families (S. 2617).
"We must do everything in our power to stand up for the brave men and women that stand up for our flag," Bachmann said. "The bills I supported today will help with veterans’ housing, facilities, pay and medical care. I am pleased that these bills passed and will fight to ensure that we pay our debt and show our gratitude to every man or woman who has worn the uniform – including those who wear it today."
S. 2617, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2008, would give disabled veterans a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for their disability compensation. By Fiscal Year 2009, this would mean an additional $857 million in compensation for disabled veterans which will help ensure that America’s wounded warriors are given the support they need in the face of rising living costs.
H.R. 157, the Rural Veterans’ Access to Care Act, would give thousands of veterans living far away from VA medical facilities better access to healthcare using non-VA hospitals near their homes. This legislation will help ensure veterans have more convenient and necessary access to health services and are not forced to travel hundreds of miles to receive medical care.
"Today’s slate of veterans bills exemplifies the positive action that can be taken when Members of Congress put aside their differences and put their country first," Bachmann said. "It is truly the least we can do for those who risk life and limb for this country."
The Congresswoman also supports the Veterans’ Construction and Extensions Act of 2008 (H.R. 6832), which, though debated on the floor earlier this week is likely to come to a vote tomorrow. This legislation would authorize the construction of new veterans’ medical facilities and help refinance veterans’ home loans.
