Press ReleasesNovember 13, 2008 McCaskill Applauds Disaster Declaration for Missouri President's declaration will allow federal assistance to help communities rebuild WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill applauded President Bush’s decision to declare the storms that hit Missouri in mid-September of 2008 a major disaster, making communities affected by the severe storms eligible for federal disaster assistance. In October, McCaskill wrote Bush a letter urging him to issue a disaster declaration to qualify Missouri for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding to help rebuild public infrastructure, businesses and homes. “In the past two years, Missourians have faced nine natural disasters that have taken lives and destroyed the foundations of communities,” McCaskill said. “It’s important that we do everything we can to help people get the assistance that they need to rebuild their homes and businesses and get back on their feet in the wake of these tragedies.” People in the following counties are eligible for individual assistance: Boone, Callaway, Chariton, Lewis, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Osage, Schuyler, St. Charles, St. Louis, Stone, Taney, Texas and Webster counties, and St. Louis. Public assistance will also go to state and local governments and nonprofit organizations for emergency work and repair. Counties that are eligible to receive public assistance are: Adair, Audrain, Barry, Bollinger, Butler, Callaway, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Chariton, Christian, Clark, Crawford, Dent, Douglas, Dunklin, Howard, Howell, Knox, Lewis, Lincoln, Linn, Madison, Maries, Marion, Miller, New Madrid, Oregon, Ozark, Perry, Ralls, Ray, Reynolds, Ripley, Schuyler, Scotland, Scott, Shannon, Shelby, St. Genevieve, Stoddard, Stone, Sullivan, Taney, Texas, Wayne, Webster and Wright counties.
