Press ReleasesSeptember 26, 2008 McCaskill Announces Funds For Five City Police Departments in Southeast Missouri Grants will help purchase police vehicles for local communities WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator McCaskill announced today that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved Rural Development grants through its Economic Impact Initiative program for five cities in Southeast Missouri: Clarkton, Doniphan, Ellington, Steele, and Wardell. The funds awarded will allow each city’s police department to purchase a police car, paying for 75 percent of the total cost of the vehicles while each city will covers the remaining 25 percent. “The police officers in these cities must have the reliable equipment to do their jobs – to protect our communities and to protect themselves,” McCaskill said. “These grants are an important part of making the cities of Clarkton, Doniphan, Ellington, Steele, and Wardell as safe as possible for their residents.” The Economic Impact Initiative is a program within USDA Rural Development division which aims to improve the economy and quality of life in rural communities across the nation. The grants, totaling over $78,000, are listed below by city:
Senator McCaskill believes that federal grants and loans are a positive alternative to earmarks, which in the past have been authorized during a secretive process with little accountability. Competitive federal grants and low-interest government loans bring federal assistance to Missouri in an honest and fiscally responsible manner.
