| COLLINS, LIEBERMAN TO EXAMINE PROPOSED FEDERAL INTELLIGENCE CENTER | |||

WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Wednesday, February 26, 2003, Senate Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ranking Member Joe Lieberman (D-CT) will hold the committee’s second hearing on President Bush’s plan to establish a new federal organization to analyze terrorism-related intelligence.
Wednesday’s witnesses will include the FBI and CIA officials who have primary responsibility for creating the new organization, called the Terrorist Threat Integration Center, and Gordon England, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. “Knowledge is power, and clearly those who are charged with defending our homeland at all levels of government must have the most timely and accurate information available. At the same time, however, we must also ensure that our intelligence gathering does not trample on the constitutional rights of American citizens, ” Collins said Tuesday. “I have many questions about the structure of the proposed organization, and I look forward to discussing them with our witnesses at Wednesday’s hearing,” The hearing, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., will be broadcast live on the committee’s web site at http://govt-aff.senate.gov.
