Press Release of Senator CantwellCantwell Congratulates Evergreen High School for Being Selected to March in the 2009 Inaugural ParadeMonday, December 08,2008 WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) congratulated the Evergreen High School marching band for its successful bid to participate in the 2009 Inaugural Parade in Washington, DC. The theme for this year’s inauguration is "A New Birth of Freedom" and commemorates the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. "In 2004, the Evergreen High School football team made history by becoming the first large school team from Southwest Washington to make a state championship game,” said Cantwell. “Now the school’s marching band will be part of history by participating in next year’s Inaugural Parade. Inauguration festivities will draw millions of people to the nation’s capital, and I couldn’t be more proud that some of Washington state’s most talented musicians will be part of this historic event.” The Evergreen High School Band is the four-time winner of the Pacific Northwest Marching Band Title, and the winner of many other multi-state band competitions. The band was selected from more than 1,300 applications received by the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee, who is responsible for coordinating the parade. In year’s past, between 300 and 400 schools and organizations have applied to participate. The band will be one of 60-80 organizations from across the country participating in the January 20, 2009 event.
