In 2000, the Department of Agriculture and Land Reform, (Northern Cape Province -South Africa) appointed a consultant, Prof Gert Venter to perform a feasibility study for the setup of a greenhouse production unit at Windsorton. The study was completed in December of the same year and the construction of a greenhouse at Windsorton put on tender by the Department. The tender was awarded to Vegtech and in April 2006 the greenhouse was finally covered with plastic sheeting.

Within development circles, many programs have emerged that assisted farmers to increase crop production per acreage to ensure enough food availability for household consumption. While these programs and initiatives were primarily successful in addressing household food security, they largely failed to open up markets opportunities where farmers could sell produce beyond those required for subsistence.

ASNAPP successfully organized its annual ‘making quality matter’ (MQM) workshops in Malawi and Zambia drawing participation from a wide range of stakeholders in the spice industry. This year’s workshop held on the 26th August in Malawi and 29th in Zambia with a focus on SADC regions was under the theme “Economic and Market Opportunities for Small Scale Farmers in the Spice Industry".
