The interest in sports has expanded and changed since the first
Tracer Bullet on that subject was published in 1979.
Sports medicine is no longer reserved for treating the professional
athlete. Today children start playing sports, such as soccer and
T-ball, at a very early age, and with greater intensity than their
parents did. Title IX of the Higher Education Act of 1965 has
encouraged the growth in sports for girls and women. More people
are physically active throughout their life, spawning interest
in recreational sports at all ages as well as an interest in the
techniques for resuming these athletic activities after injury.
Sports medicine is the field of medicine concerned primarily
with injuries sustained in athletic activities, both individual
exercise and team sports. This Tracer Bullet covers a
broad range of topics from prevention to the assessment and treatment
of injuries, from physical therapy and alternative medicine to
nutrition, drug use, and the psychological aspects of injury.
Materials on the physiology of exercise, such as why do our bodies
move they way they do and what is the optimal movement for each
sport are also included. Sports medicine information can be specific
for the age of the athlete (youth, adolescent, adult) as well
as for gender. Publications are available for professional clinicians,
trainers, high school coaches, parents of athletes, and for the
athletes themselves. This Tracer Bullet is designed to
help individuals locate information about their sports injury
or condition or to simply explore the field of sports medicine
in the collections of the Library of Congress. Publications issued
since 1995 are emphasized. Not intended to be a comprehensive
bibliography, this guide is designed--as the name of the series
implies--to put the reader "on target."
