As
Congress considers policies to address two of the most pressing issues
facing the nation -- human-caused global warming and U.S. dependence on
oil – Chairman Waxman requests that the National Academy of Sciences
convene an expert panel to examine the key environmental and economic
issues related to biofuels and liquid fuels derived from coal.

Hearing
Will Question Political Influence on Government Climate Change Scientists
The
Oversight Committee will hold a hearing on January 30 regarding political
interference in the work of government climate change scientists. In
preparation for the hearing, Chairman Waxman and Ranking Member Davis
have requested documents from the Council on Environmental Quality
related to allegations that officials edited scientific reports and took
other actions to minimize the significance of climate change.

As part
of President Bush's revised strategy for Iraq, he appears likely to
propose giving large sums of U.S. taxpayer dollars to decrepit and
possibly corrupt state-owned Iraqi companies. In a letter to his
colleagues, Rep. Waxman proposes that Congress answer several key
questions regarding the President's new spending proposal.
