Full Decision (PDF, 5 pages)

Summary

This decision responds to a letter from the Secretary of the Interior (Secretary)to the Comptroller General of the United States, wherein the Secretary wishes to use appropriated funds for the National Park Service to purchase a tract of land adjacent to the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. The purpose of purchasing the land is to prevent it from being used in a way contrary to the highway's memorial nature.

Appropriated funds are available for purchase of lands, as long as those lands are within the authorized boundaries of established areas under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. The Secretary is authorized to purchase the tract of land adjacent to the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.
