- Promote trade and investment between the U.S. and Sri Lanka: Improving trade relations benefits both the U.S. and Sri Lanka. A larger flow of U.S. goods to Sri Lanka will improve Sri Lankan development, which will bring back benefits to U.S. consumers. The U.S. is Sri Lanka's largest export market. Sri Lanka exports nearly $1.5 billion worth of goods to the U.S. and the U.S. exports nearly $370 million worth of goods to Sri Lanka. Some of the largest business links with Sri Lanka are Coca-Cola, IDDM, Tandy Coop., Mast Industries, and IMC Agrico.
- Ban terrorist activity of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE): The LTTE, the Tamil terrorism group Sri Lanka, has been responsible for the slayings of Sri Lankan political and military leaders and many civilians. In order to promote Sri Lanka's peace process, it is important to deplore the terrorist violence of the LTTE and to block military and humanitarian funding for the LTTE.
- Foster development within the Sri Lankan-American community: There are approximately 100,000 Sri Lankans in the U.S., whose communities have made economic and social impacts throughout various cities across the U.S. Sri Lankans have established schools for children and created innovative businesses, such as software development companies.
- Focus on Sri Lanka related issues: Some of the multi-disciplinary areas that need attention are human rights, drug trafficking and development of information technology.
