ROYBAL-ALLARD ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard announced that a bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives today recommends funding for several projects of importance to Los Angeles, including an anti-gang program in Downey, the Police Department Regional Youth Center in Huntington Park, and LA's Best, an award-winning delinquency prevention program.

"I am very pleased that these programs which make such a difference in our communities and in the lives of our teenagers will receive additional consideration," said Roybal-Allard. "By providing after-school activities and alternatives to gang activity, our children will have a better chance to fulfill their dreams."

Language in support of the programs was included in the bill funding the Departments of Commerce, Justice, State and the Judiciary, which passed the House by a vote of 400-21. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard requested these important programs be included in the legislation.

The bill must still pass the Senate and differences must be resolved later in the year by a House-Senate conference committee. President Bush is expected to sign the bill into law prior to October 1.
