ROYBAL-ALLARD JOINS TWO NEW SUBCOMMITTEES OF THE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard announced today that she is joining two new subcommittees of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, which controls much of our nation's federal spending and oversees America's federal agencies.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard will now serve on the Subcommittee on Homeland Security and the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Education.

"As a member of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security, I will have a significant role in allocating funds for our homeland defense," said Roybal-Allard. "I am very concerned that our country remains extremely vulnerable to another terrorist attack. I will work, through this committee, to ensure that our federal government has the necessary resources to defend our nation from terrorism."

The Subcommittee on Homeland Security oversees funding of the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the following former agencies: Immigration and Naturalization Service, U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Secret Service, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Transportation Security Agency (TSA), which carries out security screenings at airports, is also funded through the Subcommittee on Homeland Security.

The Subcommittee on Labor, HHS, and Education oversees funding for the Department of Labor, Department of Health and Human Services, and Department of Education. The annual appropriations bill for these three agencies is the largest domestic spending bill. It funds the National Institutes of Health, Center for Disease Control, Head Start, and Pell Grants.

"I am pleased to serve on the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education because I am committed to ensuring funding for important programs, like: enforcement of worker protection laws, Medicare and Medicaid, aid for local hospitals and community health centers, and help for families paying for college," said Roybal-Allard.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard joined the new subcommittees as part of the Appropriations Committees bi-annual reorganization process. In the last Congress, Rep. Roybal-Allard served on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, State, and the Judiciary and the Subcommittee on Energy and Water.
