ROYBAL-ALLARD SUPPORTS UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN IN SUPREME COURT CASE

In response to President Bush's recent decision to file two briefs in opposition to the diversity programs at the University of Michigan, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard issued the following statement:

"President Bush has characterized the University of Michigan's diversity policy in a distorted manner by equating it with a quota system that gives opportunities to unqualified individuals of color at the expense of more qualified white students.

Contrary to these assertions, Michigan's diversity policy is not a system of quotas, nor does it provide preferences for unqualified students. Instead, Michigan's policy encourages a diverse student body whose disparate backgrounds enrich student life and ensure that the workforce of tomorrow will reflect every segment of American society.

The Supreme Court should uphold the University of Michigan's diversity policy and send a clear message that promoting equal opportunity is fundamental to the fabric of our nation."

Background:

In March, the Supreme Court will consider two cases involving undergraduate and law school admissions at the University of Michigan. The cases began in 1997, when three white students who were turned down for admission filed lawsuits alleging that the use of "racial preferences" violated the Constitution's guarantee of equal protection. The Supreme Court will decide whether, and under what circumstances, colleges and universities can use race as a factor in admissions. Their decision could overturn a 1978 Supreme Court ruling that a state interest may be served by using race as a factor in screening applicants.
