CELEBRATING AMERICA'S BIRTH.

Fireworks, picnics, barbecues and parades are all traditional and fun ways families throughout this country celebrate the birth of our nation. The Fourth of July is a joyful time. It's a special day for us to reflect upon our country's humble and uncertain beginnings with a renewed sense of pride and appreciation.

Two hundred and twenty eight years after the ratification of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, it continues to capture the heart and spirit of the American people. The principles outlined in this document remain our country's guiding light. It defines what we stand for and who we are as a nation. Born of the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence also represents the tremendous sacrifices and hardships Americans will endure to preserve our freedoms.

Today, our men and women in uniform continue to exemplify Thomas Jefferson's glorious words stated eloquently in the Declaration of Independence ". with a firm reliance on the protection of Devine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred honor."

We are privileged to have thousands of Californians who have selflessly taken this pledge. They are California's two million veterans, 121,800 active duty military personnel, 90,600 reservists and 20,700 National Guardsmen. Of those serving, more than 21,000 men and women from California are currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Another 51,000 Californians have already served in those countries. Just as our forefathers sacrificed on the battlefield, they too have answered our nation's call to duty. They are enduring harsh conditions and, regrettably, some will never return home. This Independence Day is an opportunity for all of us to pay tribute to them and their families.

To our veterans past and present, and to all of our men and women in uniform, I thank you for your sacrifices and significant contributions in defense of our nation. Your service sustains the patriotic ideals embodied in the Declaration of Independence and strengthens the foundation of our great nation. You instill in us a sense of pride that, "the star-spangled banner forever shall wave - O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!"

Best wishes to all for a wonderful and safe Fourth of July.
