(December 1, 2006) Downtown, Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) commends Bienestar, a non-profit organization that provides HIV/AIDS services to Latino families and other underserved individuals, for its outstanding work in the community during the World AIDS Day at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Placita Olvera in downtown Los Angeles. More than 300 individuals gathered at the event to honor family members and friends who passed away from HIV and AIDS. The congresswoman pledged that she would continue to work with her colleagues in Congress to protect federal funding to communities for health care and support services for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS and to ensure that those funds are available to the Los Angeles area for organizations such as Bienestar. Established in 1989, Bienestar - which means "well-being" in Spanish - serves families throughout the counties of Los Angeles (with offices in East and South Los Angeles and Hollywood), San Bernardino, and San Diego by providing community education, advocacy, and other direct services such as HIV testing, counseling, and drug and alcohol education and prevention.
