(July 1, 2006) Downtown, Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) welcomed hundreds of legal permanent residents to the Los Angeles Convention Center on July 1 as part of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' National Citizenship Day. The national effort consisted of a series of citizenship workshops held across the country on July 1 to assist eligible immigrants through the process of becoming U.S. citizens. Trained workshop volunteers provided an estimated 1,800 attendees throughout the day with free assistance with the application process, including completion of the naturalization application N-400, the taking of photographs and the delivery of completed naturalization packets to U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services. The event was organized by the We Are America Coalition, which is a national alliance of community, labor and religious groups. The congresswoman spoke on behalf of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus at a kick-off morning press conference where she emphasized the importance of citizenship and registering to vote. Other local officials in attendance included Los Angeles City Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) and Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-31).
