(March 25, 2006) Downey, CA - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) leads the Pledge of Allegiance at the 10th Annual Arc of Southeast Los Angeles County's "Walk for Independence" at Downey's Stonewood Center Mall. The congresswoman congratulated the walk's participants and presented Arc's Executive Director Kevin MacDonald with a congressional certificate of recognition in honor of the organization's 50 year anniversary of working on behalf of people with mental retardation. As part of the kick-off ceremony for the one- to- three mile walk, the congresswoman made the following remarks: ". I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Arc of Southeast Los Angeles County on its Golden Anniversary - its 50 years of excellent advocacy and service for people with developmental disabilities. Arc's leadership, dedication, and commitment to providing a wide variety of programs and services for the residents of our southeast communities is truly commendable. Let's recognize them with a round of applause. I also thank all of the parents, volunteers and service providers whose love, support, and determination give people with disabilities the strength to strive for independence and to reach their full potential. I thank all of you for being here this morning. Your support of today's event helps to generate greater interest and awareness of the needs of people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. But equally as important, if not more so, your participation offers hope and sends a clear message to the developmentally disabled, that they are valued and have the potential to realize their dreams for a better future and quality of life."
