(March 22, 2006) Downtown, Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) thanks Miki Jordan (pictured right), the Executive Director of Para Los Niños, for her 14 years of service to the community's children and families. Ms. Jordan is leaving the social service agency to head up the Junior Blind of America. In recognition of her service, the organization named its multipurpose room in her honor. The congresswoman also presented Ms. Jordan with a Congressional Certificate of Recognition. Each weekday, the non-profit agency assists more than 2,000 children and youth, ages 6 weeks through 21 years, and more than 4,000 families annually through programs implemented at 20 sites. The organization's main offices and original site are located within blocks of downtown Los Angeles. Additional programs and services are located in the underserved inner cities of Los Angeles, including Skid Row, Pico-Union and East Los Angeles. Services provided by Para Los Niños include: child development and education; a Charter School; child abuse prevention and intervention; after-school enrichment; and youth diversion and delinquency prevention. In addition, the organization offers comprehensive family support, which includes counseling, parenting classes, English-as-a-second-language classes, mental health counseling, and youth workforce services. A longtime supporter of Para Los Niños, the congresswoman secured $500,000 for its programs in 2001 and currently serves on its advisory board. |
