Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard announces the winners of the 2005 Congressional Art Competition
 
 

Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard is pleased to announce the winners of the 2005 34th Congressional District Student Art Competition.

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard congratulates Steven L. Montgomery of Bellflower who was this year's first place winner of the 34th Congressional District Student Art Competition. A 12th grade student at Mayfair High School, Steven won for his color pencil drawing titled "The World Reflected In An Eye." His artwork will be exhibited at the U.S. Capitol for one year.
"This art competition showcases the extraordinary creative talents of the students of the 34th Congressional District," Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard said.  "I am so proud to represent a district filled with so many artistic students, caring parents, inspirational teachers, and devoted community and business leaders who lend their support each year to make the art competition a success."

Each competition entry was judged on three criteria: originality, technical skill, and artistic presentation.
 
The first place prize went to Steven L. Montgomery of Bellflower, a 12th grade student at Mayfair High School.  His color pencil drawing, titled "The World Reflected in an Eye," will be exhibited at the U.S. Capitol for one year.  Steven received a four-day trip for three to Washington, D.C. for the national exhibit opening and $500 spending money.  His teacher, Mr. Robert Nelson, also received a trip to Washington, D.C. and a $600 gift certificate for art supplies that will benefit art students from Mayfair High.  Steven won a $1,000 scholarship, a $200 gift certificate for art supplies, and $100 cash.  In addition, a copy of his piece was printed on 3,000 posters representing the competition.
 
Second place was awarded to Jean Lee of Bellflower, a sophomore at Mayfair High School and last year's second place winner.  She received a $750 scholarship, a $175 gift certificate for art supplies, and $100 cash.  Her school was also awarded a $400 gift certificate for art supplies.  Third place went to Hei Man

Cheung also of Bellflower, and a senior at Mayfair High School.  She received a $500 scholarship, a $150 gift certificate for art supplies, and $100 cash.  A $300 gift certificate for art supplies was also awarded to her school.

In addition, three students received Honorable Mention awards: Downey High School senior David Chao of Downey, who also won an honorable mention award last year; Christian Griffith of Bellflower, a freshman at Mayfair High School; and Jennifer Rosas also a Bellflower resident and a senior at Mayfair High School.  Each of them will get a $250 scholarship, a $125 gift certificate for art supplies, and $100 cash.  A $200 gift certificate was also awarded to David's, Christian's and Jennifer's schools.  Their art, along with that of the second and third place winners, will be displayed in Congresswoman Roybal-Allard's office for one year.

All 169 entries submitted for the 12th Annual Student Art Competition are currently on display at the Mexican Cultural Institute Gallery at the historical Olvera Street site until May 29th.  El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, also known as Olvera Street, is located at the corner of Los Angeles and Alameda Streets.  Entrance is free and open to the public.  Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays thru Fridays, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
