(October 8, 2005) Boyle Heights - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard spoke to a large crowd at Roosevelt High School as part of the kick-off to Los Angeles City Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's "City-Wide Day of Service With Our Youth." The day highlighted the City of Los Angeles' commitment to schools and community service. Local residents and students participated in community beautification projects such as tree planting, mural painting, water fountain repairs, area nuisance house clean-ups, landscaping, community gardens, graffiti removal, street cleaning, bulky item pick up, alley clean up, and cleaning abandoned lots. The event also included a public education outreach program to inform residents about city services. Similar beautification projects also took place at Castello Park, Para Los NiƱos, Pueblo Del Sol, and Pico Aliso. Pictured on the right, the congresswoman stands with the founder and chairman of Panda Restaurant Group, Inc., Mr. Andrew Cherng, who provided lunch for the event's participants.
