(June 14, 2005) Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Roybal-Allard was awarded the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) 2005 Public Service Award for her efforts to direct federal attention toward the alarming increase in Cesarean Sections performed in the United States today. The congresswoman's request directing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to compare the short and long term risks for mothers and babies of cesarean versus vaginal births was included in a House Appropriations measure that recently passed in full Committee. Pictured in the first photo at the reception on Capitol Hill celebrating the College's 50th Anniversary, the congresswoman is pictured with a group of Nurse-Midwives from California. Pictured in the second photo (from left to right): Kate Harrod, Chair of the ACNM Government Affairs Committee; Lynne Himmelreich, President of the Midwives PAC; Congresswoman Roybal-Allard; and Debbie Jessup, a Nurse-Midwife who is working as a congressional fellow in the congresswoman's Washington office.
