(May 31, 2005) Los Angeles Harbor - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard tours the Port of Los Angeles on a US Coast Guard 25- foot fast response boat with Rear Admiral Kevin J. Eldridge, U.S. Coast Guard, Commander, Eleventh District. The armed speed boats are used in homeland security and law enforcement missions. Prior to the tour, the congresswoman met with members of the Central California Area Maritime Security Committee . The Committee, which was mandated by Congress through the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, is charged with §identifying potential threats; improving security measures and procedures; improving communications; decreasing vulnerabilities; coordinating contingency planning; and conducting exercises . The Central California Area Maritime Security Committee is comprised of industry, labor, law enforcement, and first responder agencies at the federal, state, and local levels . This strong partnership fostered by the Central California Area Maritime Security Committee in the Los Angeles - Long Beach port area serves as an outstanding model for the rest of the nation. The Ports of Los Angeles-Long Beach make up the largest port complex in the U.S. and the third largest in the world. Approximately 47% of containerized trade entering the U.S. currently comes through the port complex.
