(May 3, 2005) Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard met with the Principal of Woodlawn Avenue Elementary School in Bell to discuss legislative issues associated with school improvement. Principal Mara Bommarito was in the nation's capital for the Comprehensive School Improvement Principals' Summit. Ms. Bommarito was among a chosen group of principals from throughout the country selected by the Coalition for Comprehensive School Improvement to attend the summit. The coalition described Ms. Bommarito and the other principals as "the most effective principals serving our nation's most needy students." The congresswoman and Ms. Bommarito discussed her efforts to improve education at Woodlawn under the federal Comprehensive School Reform program which provides federal funding to implement specific reform measures at qualifying schools. Under the school's program first implemented a couple years ago, Principal Bommarito said Woodlawn students improved markedly on state academic standardized tests.
