(April 27, 2005) Downtown, Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard's district staff wears jeans to work in recognition of Denim Day. Organized by the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women (LACAAW), Denim Day is an event held to protest common misconceptions and negative attitudes that contribute to violence against women. The group works to dispel, for example, the notion that most rapes occur in a dark alley by a stranger. According to the U.S. Justice Department, in three out of four cases of rape and sexual assault, the victims knew their attacker. Denim is the theme of the event following a misguided 1999 decision by a Supreme Court Justice in Italy, who overturned a rape case because he said the young girl's jeans were too tight to be taken off by someone else, indicating that she must have assisted her attacker, thereby giving her "consent." Pictured from left to right in the front row: Field Deputy Angela Sur; Field Deputy Eric Robles; and Executive Assistant Olivia Zamora. Pictured in the back row from left to right: District Chief of Staff Ana Figueroa-Davis; Field Deputy Lorena Sanchez; Caseworker Laura Peralta; Field Deputy Eddie Tafoya; Grants Manager Juan Carlos Aviles; and Caseworker Jennifer Rodriguez.
