(March 21, 2005) Downtown - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard tours the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID) with the district's President, Carol Schatz, and its Director of Economic Development, Hal Bastian. The DCBID, founded in 1998, is a coalition of nearly 480 property owners dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in downtown Los Angeles. The DCBID funds the clean and safe team known as the Purple Patrol. The district also promotes business retention and recruitment, acts as a housing resource to potential residents and developers, and carries out a downtown marketing program that includes special events, promotional offers, advertising campaigns and other public relations efforts. The congresswoman, shown touring a loft condominium in the Toy Loft Building, is enjoying the view atop the roof of the South Park Lofts. A proud resident of downtown, the congresswoman is an avid supporter of downtown revitalization efforts. She worked with local and federal leaders to bring funds for the new federal courthouse. She also led the successful charge for the construction of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension, a transportation project started by her father, retired Congressman Edward R. Roybal. The extension will travel to the communities of Downtown Los Angeles, Little Tokyo, the Arts District, Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. In addition, the congresswoman secured funding for the design of a pedestrian-friendly streetscape on First Street; the L.A. Conservancy's Façade Improvement Grant program to help revitalize historic theater facades along Broadway; a study on the viability of re-establishing the historic Red Car trolley in downtown; and $1.1 million for a parking structure to support downtown small businesses.
