(May 2, 2007) Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard congratulates Theodore Roosevelt High School senior Selina Talitha Duran, daughter of Alicia and Greg Duran, on being selected to receive a $15,000 Girls Inc. college scholarship - one of only 10 recipients in the country. Selina plans to study International Economics at UCLA in the Fall. The Student Body President has been involved in Girls Inc. for four years and traveled to our nation's capital as part of the non-profit organization's advisory board. As a board member, Selina visited Members of Congress, including U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer of California and Congresswoman Roybal-Allard (CA-34) who represents Boyle Heights where Selina lives and attends school, to advocate for increased federal funding for physical education in high schools and for programs to encourage female students to pursue studies and careers in math, science and engineering. Girls Inc. is a youth organization that provides after school and summer programs to girls throughout the United States and Canada. The organization's activities focus on math, science, sports, financial literacy, health, leadership and safety. Selina’s favorite Girls Inc. activity is Botball, in which she and her teammates build and program a robot that is used to compete against other schools in California. More information about Girls Inc. and its local affiliates is available at www.girlsinc.org.
