(April 6, 2007) East Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard joins the Bribiesca family in celebrating the opening of their newly restored home built in the 1930s at Ditman Avenue. Participants of the Los Angeles Communities Advocating for Unity, Social Justice and Action (LA CAUSA) YouthBuild program completed the renovation work at no expense to the homeowner.  Since 2003, LA CAUSA, Inc. has provided on-the-job construction training to 143 young adults in East Los Angeles through the construction or rehabilitation of at least 25 residential units for low-income families, totaling more than 25,000 hours of construction experience. The program is designed to instruct low-income at-risk young adults, ages 18 to 24, in various construction specialties such as carpentry, drywall, roofing, tile work and exterior and interior painting while the students also work toward obtaining their GED or high school diploma. More than 30 young adults worked three months to complete the restoration of Mrs. Bribiesca's home where she lives with six other family members, including four children. The project was made possible with the assistance of private, state and federal funds, including a $700,000 federal HUD grant secured with the congresswoman's support and a generous grant for materials by the Pentair Foundation. Pictured from left to right in the first photo showing Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) cutting the ribbon with an electric saw: LA CAUSA Student Edgar Almodovar; LA CAUSA Youthbuild Director Alejandro Covarrubias; Jolene and Joel Ceniceros (Mrs. Bribiesca’s children); Amber Herrera (Mrs. Bribiesca’s grandchild); and Mrs. Gina Bribiesca, homeowner.  Pictured in the second group photo: Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard and students from LA CAUSA YouthBuild who carried out the restoration of the Bribiesca home in East Los Angeles.
