ROYBAL-ALLARD SECURES $2.5 MILLION FOR ANGEL'S GATE ACADEMY
Program benefits at-risk youth

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard announced today that she had successfully secured $2.5 million in the Department of Defense appropriations bill for Angel's Gate Academy.

"Angel's Gate Academy does a great job of steering kids in the right direction," said Roybal-Allard. "I am pleased to have secured this funding to continue this important program because I know it makes a real difference for families in our community."

Angel's Gate Academy is an educational, early-intervention program for "at risk" youth. The residential program is a joint effort between the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the Army National Guard. The goal of the program is to pro-actively correct a child's behavior before it escalates into more serious problem behavior.

The LAUSD identifies children who might benefit from the program, which includes 4- week session at Angel's Gate Academy in San Luis Obispo, CA. Once they return to school, the Angel's Gate Academy staff conduct follow-up sessions with the children's parents.

"This funding is a great investment in the future of our community," said Roybal-Allard. "Supporting early intervention programs like Angel's Gate Academy has the power to turn around young lives."

In an era when many programs are being cut, the $2.5 million for Angel's Gate Academy is actually an increase over the $1.5 million Congresswoman Roybal-Allard secured last year for the program. The funds are included in the Department of Defense Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2003, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives last night and will now go to the President for his signature.
