ROYBAL-ALLARD JOINS STUDENTS IN SUPPORT OF EDUCATIONAL EQUALITY FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT YOUTH

Washington, D.C. -- Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard joined fellow Members of Congress, advocacy groups, and students from across the country at a rally at the U.S. Capitol in support of legislation to help undocumented immigrant students attend college.

Roybal-Allard told the crowd of approximately 100 students, parents, teachers, and advocates that it is critically important for them to share their experiences with Members of Congress to build support for the Student Adjustment Act.

"Your personal stories are dramatic examples of the urgent need for this legislation," said Roybal-Allard. "I am sponsoring the Student Adjustment Act because I have heard from students - just like you - who are excelling in school, but can't realize their dream of attending college due to their immigration status."

"California has led the way by using state law to give undocumented immigrant students equal access to a college education," said Roybal-Allard. "It is time for us to pass federal legislation that will give states the choice to catch up with California."

While California and Texas have passed state laws permitting their resident students to pay in-state tuition rates, there is no national law governing this issue. Passage of the Student Adjustment Act would allow all states to offer in-state tuition rates to their resident students and give the students the opportunity to legalize their immigration status.

"The provisions in this bill will break down many of the barriers these children face to achieving their fullest potential," said Roybal-Allard. "The Student Adjustment Act will make it possible for some of our country's best and brightest students to earn college degrees and become contributing members of our society."
