ROYBAL-ALLARD SUPPORTS EDUCATIONAL EQUALITY
FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT STUDENTS

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard today joined with CHIRLA in advocating for legislation that provides access to higher education for undocumented immigrant students.

"I am excited to be part of a bi-partisan effort in Congress to open the doors of educational opportunity to academically qualified immigrant students," said Roybal-Allard.

CHIRLA held a press conference to highlight its support of two immigration bills: the Student Adjustment Act, sponsored by Congresswoman Roybal-Allard, and the DREAM Act, sponsored by Senator Hatch and Senator Durbin. The two bills are similar, but not identical.

"While the DREAM Act differs somewhat from my bill, I am pleased to see the growing momentum in Congress to help undocumented immigrant children become full participants in our society," said Roybal-Allard. "Legislation is needed because thousands of talented children are unable to receive a college education. As a result, our country is losing the benefit of their talent and potential contributions."

Roybal-Allard's bill, the Student Adjustment Act, will give states the opportunity to offer undocumented students, who meet certain criteria, the opportunity to pay in-state tuition rather than the higher, out-of-state tuition fees. These students will also be able to qualify for federal student loans and grants, and to apply for legal residency in this country.

The DREAM Act has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee and is awaiting a vote by the U.S. Senate. The Student Adjustment Act is pending before two committees: the House Judiciary Committee and the House Education and the Workforce Committee.

"I am confident that, working with advocate groups, like CHIRLA, and my Senate colleagues, we will pass this important legislation and help thousands of students realize the American dream," said Roybal-Allard.
