ROYBAL-ALLARD ADDRESSES LATINO ACTIVISTS AT
3rd NATIONAL HISPANIC LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

DETAILS DEMOCRATIC COOPERATION ON LATINO ISSUES

At a June 20th Washington, D.C. summit of Latino activists from across the country, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard delivered a speech on how Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate are working together with advocacy groups to promote issues important to Latino families across the country.

Roybal-Allard spoke before a crowd of Hispanic leaders from across the country, including nationally recognized figures, such as: Raul Yzaguirre, President of the National Council of La Raza, Manny Mirabal, Chairman of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, and others, who were gathered at the Russell Senate Office Building for the all-day summit, which included several panel discussions.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard criticized Republicans for failing to address the needs of the Latino community.

"Republicans have talked a great deal about inclusiveness, and have expressed their concern for the needs of the Hispanic community," said Roybal-Allard. "Unfortunately, contrary to what they say, the Republican leadership has chosen to promote an agenda that hurts Hispanic children and working families."

As an example, the Congresswoman pointed to a recent vote on immigration.

"Despite Republican efforts to woo Hispanic voters with promises to help immigrant families, House Republicans defeated a family-friendly Democratic amendment to extend Section 245 (i)," said Roybal-Allard. "This vote demonstrates once again, that the Republicans are not serious about keeping immigrant families together."

In the face of such opposition, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard said that the activists' work is critical to helping Democrats in Congress fight on behalf of Latino families.

"The partnership between House and Senate Democrats, and you, serves as a powerful force to keep the extreme Republican agenda in check and to promote policies that truly benefit Hispanic Americans," said Roybal-Allard.

After reminding activists that many challenges still remain, including the need to safeguard Social Security and create an affordable and dependable prescription drug benefit for seniors, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard introduced the Majority Leader of the Senate, Tom Daschle.
