ROYBAL-ALLARD PRAISES APPOINTMENT OF LATINA CHANCELLOR AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard today applauded the appointment of France A. Córdova as the next chancellor of the University of California, Riverside (UCR).

"I am very pleased that a Latina has been appointed to head the fastest-growing campus in the UC system," said Roybal-Allard. "Ms. Córdova brings excellent experience and impressive credentials to the job. I am confident that she will make a great role model - as a Latina, a woman, a scientist, and a scholar. I wish her all the best as she takes on this exciting new challenge."

France A. Córdova will begin work at UCR on July 1st. She is now serving as the vice chancellor for research and professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Ms. Córdova was selected from a field of more than 200 candidates for the job. Prior to her appointment, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus weighed in the University of California to stress the importance of having Latinos fill leadership roles in the university.

Roybal-Allard had joined the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in writing a letter to the University of California Board of Regents urging them to appoint a Latino to one of two top positions: Chancellor at the University of California, Riverside or member of the Board of Regents.

"The prestige and competitiveness of the University of California system will be strengthened in reaffirming the university system's commitment to diversity and appreciation of inclusiveness," said the joint letter.

A copy of the letter is attached.
