ROYBAL-ALLARD BACKS MADD'S
TOUGH NEW STANDARDS FOR ALCOHOL ADS

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard today joined Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to support their recommended guidelines for all alcohol advertising.

"MADD's tough new standards for alcohol advertising would go a long way towards countering the considerable influence alcohol advertising has on our nation's youth," said Roybal-Allard. "The MADD guidelines are reasonable. They do not call for a ban on all alcohol advertising. Rather, they specify that alcohol should only be advertised to those who can legally consumer it - adults over age 21. Implementation of these guidelines would help ensure that alcohol ads reach their intended audience."

A major impetus for the development of these new guidelines was NBC's recent announcement that it would start airing ads for liquor on television. Congresswoman Roybal-Allard has been a vocal critic of NBC's decision. She joined Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA) in demanding that the network abide by its self-imposed, voluntary, 50-year ban on liquor advertisements.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard is especially supportive of MADD's recommendation calling for "counter ads" that would educate viewers about the dangers of underage drinking. She and Congressman Wolf are co-sponsors of the bill, H.R. 1509, the National Media Campaign to Prevent Underage Drinking.

"The National Media campaign would help educate parents and their children about the realities of underage drinking by airing ads on major networks like NBC, FOX, and Univision," said Roybal-Allard. "The ads would send a clear message that underage drinking is not cool - it is illegal and dangerous." HR 1509 has 71 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives.
